Subjunctive Mood

Subjunctive after suggest, recommend, insist, request — advanced TOEFL grammar.

Subjunctive: Use the base form of the verb after verbs of suggestion/demand.

  • The manager suggested that she attend the meeting. (NOT attends)
  • It is essential that the report be submitted on time. (NOT is)
  • They recommended that he apply for the position. (NOT applies)
  • Trigger Verbs: suggest, recommend, insist, demand, require, request, propose

    Trigger Adjectives: essential, important, necessary, vital, crucial

    Formation: that + subject + base verb (no -s, no "should")

    Examples

    TOEFL Tip:

    After "suggest/recommend/insist that...", always use the base form of the verb!
