倒置構文

否定副詞の後、条件文などでの倒置（主語-動詞の語順変更）を学びます。

倒置は通常の主語-動詞の語順を逆にします。TOEFL Reading・6で出題されます。

否定副詞の後：

  • *Never has* the company faced such a challenge.（会社はこのような困難に直面したことがない。）
  • *Not only did* she finish the report, but she also presented it.（報告書を完成させただけでなく、発表もした。）
  • *Rarely do* employees work on weekends.（従業員が週末に働くことはめったにない。）

    • 条件文の倒置（"if"省略）：

  • *Had* I known earlier, I would have applied.（= If I had known / もっと早く知っていたら）
  • *Should* you have any questions, please contact us.（= If you should / ご質問があれば）
  • *Were* it not for the delay, we would have finished.（= If it were not / 遅延がなければ）

    • "Only"の後：

  • Only after the meeting *did* we realize the issue.（会議後にようやく問題に気づいた。）

    After Never/Rarely/Seldom/Not only, expect inverted order (auxiliary + subject).
