Gerunds & Infinitives

When to use -ing forms vs to + verb — crucial for TOEFL Reading.

Gerund (V-ing): used as a noun

  • *Managing* a team requires leadership skills.
  • She enjoys *working* with international clients.
  • Infinitive (to + V):

  • He decided *to accept* the offer.
  • The purpose is *to improve* efficiency.
  • Verbs followed by Gerund: enjoy, avoid, consider, finish, suggest, mind, deny

Verbs followed by Infinitive: decide, plan, hope, agree, refuse, want, expect

Both (different meaning): stop, remember, forget, try

    After prepositions → always gerund:

  • She is responsible for *managing* the project.
  • Thank you for *attending* the meeting.
  • Examples

    TOEFL Tip:

"look forward to" takes a gerund, not infinitive! (to hearing, NOT to hear)
