Simple past, past continuous, and past perfect for TOEFL mastery.

Simple Past: completed actions in the past

  • The meeting *ended* at 5 PM.
  • Past Continuous (was/were + V-ing): ongoing past actions

  • She *was preparing* the report when the client called.
  • Past Perfect (had + p.p.): action completed before another past event

  • By the time we arrived, the presentation *had already started*.
  • Signal Words:

  • Simple Past: yesterday, last week, ago, in 2020
  • Past Perfect: by the time, before, after, already (in past context)
