Noun Clauses

That-clauses, wh-clauses, and whether/if clauses used as subjects or objects.

A noun clause functions as a noun — it can be a subject, object, or complement.

That-clause:

  • *That he resigned* surprised everyone. (subject)
  • We believe *that the plan will succeed*. (object)
  • Wh-clause:

  • *What the manager said* was important. (subject)
  • I don't know *where the meeting is*. (object)
  • Whether/If clause:

  • *Whether the budget will be approved* is uncertain. (subject)
  • Please confirm *whether you will attend*. (object)
  • Key Rule: In noun clauses, use statement word order (S + V), NOT question order.

  • I wonder *where the office is*. ✓
  • I wonder *where is the office*. ✗

    TOEFL Tip:

After verbs like "know/believe/confirm", if the blank starts a clause, choose "that/what/whether".
